Education, while thinking of this word we think of building
a foundation. Although it’s a lay man’s view but in a broader sense Education builds
the foundation for a bright future. Talking about the education in the past we
realize that it was different but a thoughtful process.
GuruKul
System
In ancient times, Gurukul system was followed for
imparting education. In that system a student who wished to study needed to
request the teacher (Guru, as they were called earlier) to be taught. Only
after teachers acceptance they were allowed to stay at teacher’s place where
they were taught along with helping in household activities. This not only
created a strong bond between the teacher and the student, but also taught the
student everything about managing daily activities to run a house. The guru
taught everything the child wanted to learn, from Sanskrit to the Holy
Scriptures and from Mathematics to Metaphysics. The student stayed as long as
he wished or until the guru felt that he had taught everything he could teach. Learning
was more fun as everything wasn’t restricted to memorizing some information for
getting passing grades.
Today’s
Indian Education
Today’s Indian Education structure is way more organized.
Today’s Indian Education structure is way more organized.
The basic classification of education system in
India can be divided into six broad categories which would comprise of pre-primary
level, primary level, secondary education, undergraduate level and postgraduate
level. The schooling & pre schooling comprises of the kindergarten classes
for kids below the age of 5 and schooling education comprises of classes
starting from Nursery till 12 standard. The schools can be private or
government owned. Universities in India are set up by the Central or State
Government while colleges are established by the State Government or private
bodies / trusts. All colleges are affiliated to some university. Indian Education has shown a significant change over the past years. We have good
medical colleges giving best exposure to thier students, then we have IIT’s and
IIM’s regarded the best colleges for Engineering and Management, morover we have the best law
schools also.In addition to these elite institutes there are many other
institutes that are providing everyone with their choice of courses.
Slight Analysis of the System
Our Education system is more
restricted and curriculum centric wherein a teacher finishes the task by
covering the syllabus. The role of a teacher has become narrower and system
determined. The students are more interested in cramming the lessons rather than
trying to understand the essence of them in real life. The grades decide a
person’s intellegence.
Knowledge is largely forgotten after the semester exams are
over. Still, year after year students focus on cramming information because
that is how it works. The best crammers are rewarded by the system. This is the
biggest flaw of our education system. Our
education system believes in producing a master in everything rather than
trying to understand that each individual has his/her own capability which can
be grommed to take the best out of him/her.Risk taking is mocked by restricting
everything to marks. Our testing and marking systems need to be rebuilt to
recognize original contributions, in form of creativity, problem solving,
original research and innovation. If this
happens successfully Indian education
system will change overnight.
Memorising is no learning; the
biggest flaw in our education system is perhaps that it incentivizes memorizing
above originality. We need to make sure that students are given wings to fly
their way. Each person is an individual with his/her own talent and flaw.We need
to learn to appreciate innovation and risk taking in students.Opening new
avenues of success by providing informaton and not encouraing mugging things
just for the sake of scoring good marks.
Our Education system might produce the
higghest number of Engineers but we still end up outsoucing work for
international clients rather than having new ideas and making other countries
outsource our work. The goal of our new education system should be to create
entrepreneurs, innovators, artists, scientists, thinkers and writers who can
establish the foundation of a knowledge based economy rather than the
low-quality service provider nation that we are turning into slowly and slowly.
